“Phnom Penh: The director of the Cambodian Disabled People’s Organization issued an announcement dated 4 August 2009 to support the Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation which opposes the Miss Landmine contest.

“Following an announcement of the Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation dated 31 July 2009, the Cambodian Disabled People’s Organization would like to make the following announcement:

1. We totally support the content of the announcement of the Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation not to support the Miss Landmine contest, because it can create misunderstandings among the public towards the honor of disabled people, especially of disabled women.
2. We would like to call on all disabled people who are either members or not members of the Cambodian Disabled People’s Organization at the 24 provinces and cities to join to implement this statement effectively.
3. We would like to express our great gratitude towards the Minister of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation, Mr. Ith Sam Heng, who advised the Cambodian Disabled People’s Organization on time.

“It should be noted that recently, there had been a strong reaction from the Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation after there had been information that this ministry supported the Miss Landmine contest.

“The announcement of the Ministry, dated 31 July 2009, stated that regarding the Miss Landmine contest planed to be organized by some non-government organizations on 7 August 2009, the Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation would like to explain to the public and to disabled people two points:

1. The Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation does not support the Miss Landmine contest, because it can create misunderstandings among the public towards the honor of disabled people, especially of disabled women.
2. The Ministry of Social Affairs Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation asked those responsible for organizing this program to halt it immediately in order to maintain the honor of disabled people, especially of disabled women.”
