Saturday, 7.7.2007: Cambodia Has Two Hands; It Catches Two Power Brokers at the Same Time

The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 515

“There are three fundamental principles in the world that every country applies and adheres to – i.e. the principle of neutrality which is applied by Switzerland; the former Kingdom of Cambodia during the Sangkum Reastr Niyum time applied the communist principles with China and Russia as the power brokers…, and the principle of freedom, with the United States of America, and [Great] Britain…

“In the world, there have never been leaders of a country that applies two such doctrines (communism and freedom) to develop the country. However, a country can apply communism and the currents of freedom only for the economic sector, but not for the political one at all. For instance, countries that apply communism such as Vietnam and Russia [Note: the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, the new country of the Russian Federation does not adhere to communism], they too have a free market economy like the countries that adhere to the principles of freedom, because the economy of the free world makes them progress. However, for Cambodia it seems to be different from other countries, that Cambodia now applies communism and the principles of freedom. It is observed that this is very special.

“The fact that the US Embassy broadcast [an interview with Ambassador Joseph A. Mussomeli] about the cooperation between Cambodia and the USA on 4 July 2007 through all Khmer television stations surprised Khmer citizens of all classes very much. It is 33 years since 1974 until this 4 July 2007, which is the first day for Khmer citizens and citizens of the world, that the USA is showing this brilliant relationship. This historical event [1974 was the last visit of a US naval vessel to Cambodia – and then the first again in 2007] shows a great deal of US assistance and also military assistance to Cambodia.

“These historical reflections surprised the world, and it makes especially the countries, which border on Cambodia and which used to flex their muscles against Cambodia, more modest.

“At coffee shops, there are lively discussions going on, not different from the ‘café table forum’ programs at Bayon Television Station [which is under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s daughter Hun Mana], that always raises good topics for discussion to educate the citizens; however, for the ‘café table forums’ in the streets, the topics raised and discussed are: ‘Should Cambodia move to join hands with the US or with China? Taking the hands of China, Cambodia has peace and development, taking the hands of the US, Cambodia has also peace and development. However, it is not known whether China and the US have the same intentions like Cambodia, because these two countries are the two power brokers competing with each other for economic supremacy, especially as they are different as countries following the different principles of communism and of freedom.

“It is remembered that the decades of war in Cambodia were caused by the application of the principles of communism and freedom. The peace agreements of 23 October 1991 were concluded because the two power brokers (adhering to the principles of communism and freedom) agreed to end the chronic war in Cambodia, so Cambodia has had peace until now.

“Khmer citizens pray for Cambodia to have good relations with the USA and with China, for the development of the country and for peace for all citizens.” Chakraval, Vol.15, #2695, 7.7.2007
