“Mr. Keat Chhon, a Senior Minister, the Minister of Economy and Finance, the first Vice-President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and the President of the Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum, said in a press conference on the afternoon of 20 June 2007 in Phnom Penh after the Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum, that the donor countries will provide international financing for the development of Cambodia in 2008 of more than $689 million, because the international community supports the strategic plans for the development of Cambodia.

“Senior Minister Keat Chhon said that the Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum this time is successful, because both the Royal Government and the partners for the development of Cambodia agreed with each other to strengthen the development by implementing a strategic plan of the national development in Cambodia. The second success is that the donor countries did not promise to provide just financing – i.e. the financial support by the foreign donors this time implies the complete support for the strategic plan for national development.

“The Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum held on 19 and 20 June 2007 is to replace the former Consultative Group meetings that used to be led by the Royal Government and the World Bank, as a forum to discuss with each other the implementation of the strategic plan for national development, and now to indicate that the Royal Government of Cambodia takes complete leadership of the agenda for national development, also by maintaining and strengthening the partnership with the international community and with civil society.
“According to the press release on this Forum, the meeting agreed that the implementation of the strategic plan for the national development in Cambodia for the first year foreseess noticeable progress, such as sustainable economic growth, including in thew field of social affairs. In the meantime, with these positive results, the forum also stressed the importance to make continued efforts in order to reduce the rate of maternal deaths and the number of dropout students. Looking forwards to the future, the Royal Government and the development partners agreed with each other to continue to try to encourage more development in social affairs, and to speed up the implementation of important reforms, and to strengthen good governance.

“Mr. Keat Chhon said that in the Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum, the donor countries supported the financing for the implementation of the strategic plan of the development of Cambodia in 2008 by providing approximately more than $689 million.

“It should be remembered that in 2006, the donor countries provided financing for the development of Cambodia with US$601 million [for 2007].” Kampuchea Thmey, Vol.6, #1371, 21.6.2007
