Monday, 4.6.2007: Action of Royal Government: Ministry of Information Asks Ministry of Interior to Ban Global Witness Documents

The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 511

“Phnom Penh: On 3 June 2007, the Ministry of Information wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, asking for cooperation to ban and confiscate the report published by Global Witness, entitled, ‘Cambodia’s Family Trees,’ that politically accuses the Royal Government of Cambodia of supporting and encouraging illegal logging in Cambodia, especially it personally accuses the head of the Royal Government in an attempt to provoke political hostility in the country, which is beyond the task of this organization.

“The ban and the confiscation of the report are not related to the freedom of the press and the freedom of information, to which the Royal Government always adheres, but it is an action which is legally taken against the act of the staff members of one non-government organization, who use their organization’s name to serve their political purpose. Previously, what made Global Witness lose its role as a partner of the Royal Government of Cambodia is that the representatives of this organization came to work as opponents, contradicting the agreement signed, that it had to play a role as assistant of the Royal Government. The Royal Government of Cambodia would like to state that Cambodia continues to be always prepared to cooperate with non-government organizations, in order to join with their activities for development in Cambodia.” Koh Santepheap, Vol.40, #6056, 4.6.2007
